Fore!!!
Published on June 23, 2004 By blondelife In Blogging
I have a question for everyone that reads this article. Why is it when you play golf you say fore. When i first started i thought that is was like the number four. Actually is was fore. We went golfing and i asked why and noone could answer it for me really they said that is just the way it is. Why can't it be three or two or one or cheese or something. People would still look if that is what they started with. I looked fore up in a dictionary and it says under sports that it is used to warn people ahead that their is a ball coming toward you and to watch out. It isn't those exact words but it is pretty close.

Then again why is any word that word. Haven't you ever wondered that. I always do why is a computer called that and why do people speak differant languages and who came up with them. I guess we will never know only one person will know. But if you ever figure it out please let me know as soon as you can. Cause that is one thing that i hate about life. You only know so much and with one question i am out. What came first the chicken or the egg?

Not sure about "fore"...could be something from Latin or Greek....I'm not sure. Words came up as a way to vocally describe something...they just had to pic one and then everyone went with it....As for different languages...well, that depends on where people live...languages are all usually Latin-based...and when the people moved they changed and so did their languages....

The chicken came first by the way....probably....(Evolution from reptiles started this...the chicken had to come before the egg or otherwise what could lay a chicken egg?)

I'm out,

Zoologist yeah maybe about the word fore but who knows. And why is their Latin and Greek why can't their just be one. And you need to have an egg though to have a chicken and you need a chicken to have the egg. But if i had to pick one i would go with you. Also carebear llama sounds good to me we should golf and hit the ball and yell it. lol.

FYI:

"Fore" is another word for "ahead" (think of a ship's fore and aft). Yelling "fore" is simply a shorter way to yell "watch out ahead" (or "watch out before"). It allows golfers to be forewarned, in other words.
The British Golf Museum cites an 1881 reference to "fore" in a golf book, establishing that the term was already in use at that early date (the USGA suggests the term may have been in use as early as the 1700s). The museum also surmises that the term evolved from "forecaddie."

A forecaddie is a person who accompanies a group around the golf course going forward to be in a position to pinpoint the locations of the groups' shots. If a member of the group hit an errant shot, the thinking goes, they may have alerted the forecaddie by yelling out the term.

A popular theory is that the term has a military origin. In warfare of the 17th and 18th century (a time period when golf was really taking hold in Britain), infantry advanced in formation while artillery batteries fired from behind, over their heads. An artilleryman about to fire would yell "beware before," alerting nearby infantrymen to drop to the ground to avoid the shells screaming overhead.

So when golfers misfired and send their missiles - golf balls - screaming off target, "beware before" became shortened to "fore."
